Hi I am was using play on Linux to run the game, if any other Linux users can offer any advice please do
Game loads sometimes, if deleted and reinstalled as 16 bit , but play on linux does not complete, no desktop icon gets created. If I close the game I have to reinstall and it does not always work. Thanks to any one for tips. ALSA has always failed not worried about sound.

Have a search in the game suggestions and similar subforums, there should be a post somewhere about how to play v&h on linux. By Paranoia I think.

I use playonlinux to install the game. It is a supported game and until the june 3 patch it worked flawlessly.
After that patch it didnt work. I could log in but then it would crash and return a "failed to connect to server error"
I tried to reinstall V&H but it failed with the message "cant find VHlauncher"
I downloaded the setupfile for windows and did a manual install (using playonlinux) and the game would run.
But when i closed the game i couldnt start it again.
Would start but then it would crash.
Reinstalling the game allowed me to start the game but i couldnt close it without having to reinstall.
Somehow i figured out that the game will start in fullscreen mode. ( i can then change resolution during gameplay)
So what currently working for me is this.
Download windows install file
Playonlinux
Install
Install non listed program (bottom left)
Point to the install file
Do a deafult install (note the search path below is based on my name and what i choose to name the install folder)
Start the game with:
/home/Illuthas/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/villagersandheroes/drive_c/Program Files/Villagers and Heroes VHLauncher.exe
On the small loading window check top right corner to make sure it's in full screen mode.
Play the game.

Sorry for being late to chime in. Illuthas is fully correct with how it works with wine at the moment. If only I had time to correct Arcadiens script on playonlinux.com, I would do so. But atm real life work doesn't give me that chance. Maybe after the next big patch.... I hope so.

Thanks for the replies, Im trying the reinstall path, many times ,my problem is that the install does not finish. I can still play as long as I do a reinstall every time after a complete delete and just leave the play on linux icon circling in the back ground . Once I close the game window or the play on linux window, I have to reinstall. If I leave the game at the log in window I can usually come back even after a few hours. Sadly the game will not launch from the vhLaunceher iether. So every day at present I reinstall as I have my morning coffee

Have you made sure that you dont change resolution and only use fullscreen setting?

it turned out play on linux had not deleted one of the virtual drives so I had two running at once, deleting both and reinstalling has made it work the way you posted. Thanks again.

Hi all
Many of us linux users already know that changing from fullscreen to windowed mode (and leave it there when exiting or the game crashes) result in the game refusing to start the next time. The problem started after the June patch.
I narrowed it down and maybe the DEVs might find time to add a fix for this.
The game will crash with the the setting $pref::Video::frameless = "0"; in the following file
~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/VillagersAndHeroes/AMysticalLandSAC/AMysticalLandAppDataDev/test.game/client/prefs.cs
Same problem on SAC, but the path is not consistent (depending on how you installed it).
It has to be $pref::Video::frameless = "1"; or the game will crash on startup
Hope it helps someone

Here is how I do it. I am running Linux Lite 4.6, an Ubuntu 18.04 LTS based distro. Note that the text fields in the POL dialogs are not presented properly in my setup and don't show the text I type into them. I just ignore that, press the Tab key to get to them and enter text/names.
I use Wine 3.20 for V&H. This is not a requirement, other versions may also work. To use Wine 3.20 you need to select Tools / Manage Wine versions on the POL menu, and add 3.20 for both x86 and amd64.

Now to the V&H installation. Click "Install a program" in POL.

Click "Install a non-listed program"

Click Next until you get this. Select "Install a program in a new virtual drive" and click Next.

Tab to the text field, enter e.g. VH and click Next.

Check "Use another version of Wine" and click Next.

Select 3.20 and click Next.

Select "32 bits Windows installation" and click Next.

Click Install.

Click Install.

Click Browse.

Select V&H's install application (download from https://www.villagers-and-heroes.com/) and click Open.

Click Next.

The straightforward V&H installation starts, just click Next until it is done. Don't select "Launch Villagers and Heroes" at the last step.
Select VHLauncher.exe and click Next.

Tab to the text field, enter e.g. V&H and click Next.

(screenshot limit reached, see next post)

Select "I don't want to make another shortcut" and click Next.

Select V&H and click Run.

The game will start to download and install. Once that is complete you can start playing. As stated in other forum posts you currently must use full screen mode, windowed mode fails. Good luck!
I have been running the game in Linux for several years and it works very well. I have a MSI gaming laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics. I use the nvidia-driver-435 (open source).

This guide is perfect, thx evangelia! If I had more time on hand, I would have posted a manual like that earlier, but now I can take it off my to do list (I posted a guide like that on old forums, but those are gone). Thank you!
Needless to say for linux users, that every ubuntu-based derivate will do. I usually tend to show people linux mint, since that distro tries to be as convenient and easy as windows xp once was. (it's all about what you are used to...)
* While installing v&h by PlayOnLinux, remember to NOT select "Launch Villagers and Heroes" at the last step.
* Find the best (sometimes proprietary) driver for your graphics card. I had the best results with nVidia and radeon, but installing drivers was easiest for nVidia cards.
* Fullscreen! Windowed mode would only work from within the game. But if you end the game in windowed mode, the next startup will fail. The easiest: Stay at fullscreen mode. And if you are using just one screen, it's fully ok to just tap on the joker key (that one with usually a windows symbol printed on it) and start any program you want to have running in the background (like a browser, radiostream, whatever) and returning to the game after that.

Technically play on Linux and such isn't needed. I run windowed or full screen, no adjustments, with just a wine install and direct command line installation, perhaps it's PoL that's breaking the game for y'all

Correct, PlayOnLinux is just a frontend for managing Wine. Installing V&H through POL works in most cases, in fact it is one of the easiest game I have installed with POL. For most people it is preferable compared to a command line installation.Technically play on Linux and such isn't needed. I am playing the game on Linux, Fedora Workstation (had anti cheat issues before with other games, because of not using Windows). I left windows back in 2007 and I quit Star Wars The Old Republic after being active for 5y+ because of I did not want to switch to Win, hence my option between must you windows to play the game is I quit the game and find another one. Since this is Indie game I am sure Linux usage will not be a problem. Alex
