It looks like the connection problems are on the side of Steam. There are several reports on various sites (just google: Is Steam Down?) at the moment where users have problems starting games.

So we can just wait and hope...

I don't use Steam, and in the last few days have had consistent problems trying to get on US3. Very frustrating!
Why are there server problems all the sudden?
